[I] Swedish Oraklet - small orders [message #264252] Mi, 10 Mai 2006 21:26
Arthur Hagen
I'm calling on the Swedish oracle here.

Last month, I ordered a few tobacco items from a company in Sweden, with a
total shipping value of approx. SEK 250.

Three days ago, I received the items by mail.
Today, I also received the items by mail.

Same order number and payment number -- I only paid once.

Now the question is whether they should be returned or not. It will
probably cost me around $15 to return them (there's no "return to sender at
sender's cost" for international mail), but more to the point, it's
*tobacco*, which might make a heck of a lot of difference, as there's
customs to be paid. There's no way I can take advantage of the extra
tobacco before it goes bad[1], so the alternatives are tossing or returning.

What's common and proper Swedish practice for this kind of situation? I'm
tempted to just toss it and tell the company they need to improve their
routines.

[1]: There's probably no way of even enjoying the /original/ shipment
either, as it was shipped without insulation, and by mail which took a week.
This is merchandise that must be kept refrigerated, so the shipping was
definitely substandard compared to what I'm used to from other companies.
Especially since the site stated 5-6 days in total from ordering to
delivery -- it took 12 (and 14).

Regards,

I would call or e-mail the company and ask them what to do. Thus it
would be their problem to solve. You might also be able to convice them
to send you a new order, as the last one was ruined when it arrived, if
you're lucky.

Just FYI.

If you DO end up keeping the product [1] there might be a use to which it
could be put.

Some people use tobacco for various ritual shamanic purposes. I'm not
religious even in that sense, but I've used sage and tobacco in what (for
lack of a better term) could be called "rituals" in much the same way as one
might use incense.

So, somone might very well be willling to pay you for it, since freshness is
a bit less an issue.

[1] (It is actual tobacco? I mean, not a pipe cleaner or something I can't
imagine. I know, refrigerated, but I have no idea what else it could be.)

Swedish "snus", which is much like American wet snuff, except for far fewer
chemicals (tobacco, salt and ethanol, mostly), and in small pouches, much
like tiny tea bags. Most of it single tins bought as samples to see whether
any of the new brands from the last few years are any good[2]... It
wouldn't be suitable for shamanistic rituals (in witch case I'd use it
myself).
Oh, and a steel snuff tin, which they might want returned, come to think of
it, since it might be worth the shipping.

[1]: NMF, see further up.
[2]: They aren't. I was especially disappointed with Gotlandssnus, which
tasted plain moldy.

Was that a fortunate typo?

Either way, interesting post, thank you.

Well, not the perishables, at least. I saw there was also a steel tin,
and they'll probably want that back.

Do that. Personally, I'd tell them, say I was going to bin the baccy,
and offer to send the steel tin back against some credit on my account,
to cover the postage costs.

When I order snus, it arrives bubblewrapped and sealed with so much
sticky tape that the 3M stock jumps 5% whenever I order.

I store them in the freezer, and just makes sure there's always a spare
one in the fridge. Well, actually I don't, since I don't use the stuff.
It's Ann-Cathrine who handles it once I've placed the order and paid.

That's quite bad. Just out of interest, which shop was it? I used to
order from The Northener, but their service deteriorated and they moved
their customer support phone line to Kazakhstan, of all places. Now I'm
using Snusbutiken, and they've been very good. Swift deliveries, good
packaging and friendly service.

It was The Northerner. I emailed them about their faux pas last night, and
haven't heard anything back yet. I'll give them until tomorrow. :-)

I'll have to try them, then. I used to use a local cigar importer over here
in the US (Mom's Cigars), which provided overnight delivery in properly
packed boxes with LOTS of newspaper added to keep it cool. Unfortunately,
they never fulfilled my last order (when calling, they said there would be a
two weeks delay, and that was two months ago), so I had to try something
new.

Just a follow-up to this. I contacted them on Wednesday a week and a half
ago, through the only free way they provide for this, a contact form on
their web site. I haven't heard a thing back after 10 days, so I've dumped
the excess snuff, and will keep the extra stainless steel tin as
compensation for the tobacco tax and inconvenience.

Am I being unreasonable?
